Hail Damage to Siding on a Home in Arvada, CO

Spring is here… and so are the afternoon storms that bring wind, rain and hail and even tornadoes.   Monday, May 8 marked the first severe weather outbreak of the season bringing large damaging hail to the greater Denver metro area. Denver News Channel 7 broadcast coverage as the storm that blew in from Denver and moved into Northern Colorado before spinning off to the east.

A severe thunderstorm warning prepared the public for large hail, damaging winds, lightning and torrential rains. In some parts of the state winds exceeded 70 miles an hour with extremely large hail – Thornton reported golf ball size hail and some parts of Denver including Arvada, Golden, and even Wheat Ridge saw baseball size hail shattering windshields and covering Coors Field postponing the Rockies and Cubs game.

People were warned to take cover, move their vehicles off the streets and to bring pets inside. Denver Channel 7 News warned children who were home alone not to be frightened – and to take cover. They also shared what we thought an innovative idea – suggesting that kids put on their bike helmets to protect their heads.

Unfortunately, you can’t put a helmet or a covering over your roof – the structure that ultimately protects your family and which can sustain considerable storm damage.

Inspecting your Roof after a Storm

Most homeowners do not think to inspect their roof  until they get a call from “roofing storm chasers” who show up on your front step urging you to replace your roof without really presenting a reason why.

But the fact is that when large hail – typically 1” or greater hits your roof the integrity and lifespan of the shingles are compromised eventually leading to more severe problems.

Roof systems are designed so that water on the roof drains from the roof into the drainage system. Broken, pock-marked or dislocated shingles prevents water from flowing into gutters and downspouts which can lead to water leaking into the underlayment soaking supporting structures such as insulation, sidewalls, rafters, and wooden beams. This is when inexpensive roof repairs turns into expensive projects.
